A "love letter" to Grace: I discovered Grace Livingston Hill at a time in my life when I was young and exploring my faith in Jesus Christ, femininity, and...basically figuring out how to be "in but not of the world"- something that Grace's characters do very well.

Complicated families, difficult personalities, staying true to one's own high standards- all of these things are present in her novels without coming off as sanctimonious or "preachy" (at least in my opinion). Grace is full of, well, grace.

It's the cleverness and creativity of the heroines in their various situations, perhaps, that keep uprooting for characters so good that they could be boring. The villains are often so rotten and trying, it is delightful to see them routed by either the supernatural in believable ways. Grace's novels have both great heroines\heroes AND great villains!

I am always inspired by Grace's books to hold true to my own standards, even after making terrible mistakes, to love my enemies, to persevere, to pray and to creatively use my blessings to bless other people in order to point the way to our incredible God and precious Savior.

Her books have me the hope and strength to stay open for my own great love story to take place, which I am grateful to God for - every single day. And also to look for the Fruit of the Spirit in those who claim to be Christian.

Grace Livingston Hill's books are all a little old-fashioned, but she usually does a really good plot and the "bad guy" or girl is always well done. I especially like the relative that is pushy and mistreats the main character (there's nearly always one in every book) and this book has one I really like; Marion's sister-in-law. Marion's brother is determined to sell the old homeplace and move to a farm. Marion, who is more refined than her brother, has a leaning toward music, books and other more classical pursuits. Tom and his wife think she's being ridiculous, so they are astonished when Marion rents a boarding house room and stays behind when they leave for their new farm. But things work out well for Marion in the end. A charming little book and one of my favorites from GLH.
I love Grace Livingston Hill. I wish I could hug her and thank her personally for her writings. I have to admit that some of her books last some of her books more but everyone is uplifting and edifying to me. I have never enjoyed an author as much as I have Grace.

This Book Is at once sweet, and other times straining, as you suffer with the heroin. Dear unsuspecting Miriam as her family, the people who are supposed to love and care for her strip her of all sustenance. Never mind... God is on His throne! And He looks after His own.
I'm one of the readers who read this 30 years ago and it has always been my favorite GLH book. I did purchase the new version although I agree its high but, having your favorites in collections on one device - priceless!

This is such a romantic story, you can't help but sigh. Marion Warren and Jefferson Lymon are the perfect couple. The story of Marion's determination to continue to improve her knowledge and education is inspiring. That she has to defy her family to do so is impactful.

Jefferson is the hero of everyone's dreams, falling in love at first sight and finding out who she is was endearing (today we'd call it stalking) he actually shapes events so that he can meet her.

Of course there is a great presence of spirit and its very well done. I love her books and this is the best of the best!

I've read it many times but I will always remember the very first time I read it - I couldn't put it down, not even for a moment!!!!! Marion, the heroine, is a beautiful, jewel of a young woman, and her knight in shining armor is the fabulously wealthy Jeffrey Lyman, who had recently returned to his hometown after many years spent traveling in Europe. He is immediately attracted to Marion, who seems an angel to him, she is sweetly pure and innocent, Marion is the exact opposite of most young women of her age group in the town. Jeff makes it his business to get to know Marion without interference or prejudice from anyone in the town. He falls deeply in love with her BUT will Marion's stubbornness and feelings of unworthiness wreck his plans???????
I think I would put this story in one of Grace Hill's top 10. I definitely really enjoyed it. The descriptions of the challenges facing the heroine - manipulative relatives, malicious and snobbish acquaintances from school, and the desire to find good things in life even on a very small salary, all while growing in Christian faith - are some I can definitely identify with.

The romance might not have been believable, as an extremely wealthy young businessman with very strong character, values and Christian faith admires and falls in love with the poor young woman who buys symphony tickets for the season, but it was extremely satisfying. It is very rare to read of a hero who's heart truly is in the right place, like this one. You are definitely cheering for the romance all the way, as the two must overcome both perceived and real obstacles before the end of the book. When they do, you feel as though you have been treated to a lovely story, one that refreshes.
