The Viscount Needs a Wife Rogue Series Jo Beverley 9780451471901 Books

Help me out here. I feel certain I've read another book recently with a young widow living unhappily with her in-laws until she receives a letter from a friend with news of a man looking for a wife.

After Kitty leaves for a new life, the tale is unique.

There are many trials and complications, including a plot against royals and a disruptive, vindictive dowager.

The H and h are not always the most endearing characters--that position goes to her little dog. Kitty has quite a temper and often acts or speaks without thinking. Braydon is a private, contained person who often speaks too little. The opposites attract, however.

Jo Beverley's usual impeccable research and plotting shine here.

One of her standard devices is in evidence. Characters face problems anticipating the worst--and then something unexpected pops up and changes everything.

That seems to happen in my life. The things I dread most change in an instant. Beverley gives me hope and keeps me from dwelling on my own difficulties needlessly. Thanks, Ms. Beverley!

The Viscount Needs a Wife Rogue Series Jo Beverley 9780451471901 Books Reviews

This is the best Regency I've read in the past dozen years (and I've read a lot of them). Because of the date, it incorporates the reaction of the English public to the death in childbirth of Princess Charlotte, the Regent's daughter, much more effectively than is usually done. The plot resolution for the protagonists as it works out at the end is marvelous and doesn't just come out of the blue -- there are clues leading up to it from fairly early in the book.
I did not feel like I was reading a Jo Beverley book. Compared to any of her other ones this one was dull and never developed some really good potential plot themes. Nothing really ever happened and even the romance was flat and boring. Wouldn't recommend it.
Widowed Kitty met Viscount Dauntry while visiting an old school friend.
They then visit London where he solves a royal mystery with her help. They also solve a family mystery!
Some of the Rogues appear to help and socialize.
A very enjoyable Regency with a love story and several mysteries!
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Jo Beverley writes interesting characters who aren't cookie cutter Regency types or modern characters in fancy dress. She uses history beautifully as part of the story, not just as decoration.
This is a Marriage of Convenience story, which is something I love, and it's a marriage the couple chooses, not something that is forced on them. That in itself makes it interesting because the reasons they make the choice are historically plausible.
My one quibble is that I would have preferred to see more of the conflict with the hero's inherited relatives. The elderly Lady Dauntry got off a bit too lightly.
What I love the most about this book is the depth of the plot development. The characters are multidimensional, like real people are, and I felt very involved with them as they grew to know one another. The romance was steamy but it wasn't unnecessarily so; I hate it when a plot is just a thin excuse for some strangers to have sex, even if the sex scenes are well-written.

And I loved the way Ms. Beverley handled the peripheral glimpses of the other Rogues. When a character from an earlier book enters, even though I've read the book and have a knowledge of that character, the people in the new book don't. They're meeting him or her as a stranger, and so we get to see this familiar character anew, as a stranger would (but not really!).

Jo Beverley was at the height of her craft. Her passing is a great loss.
I felt the heroine was a modern woman thrust into a Regency world. I wonder if the author was trying to write a heroine that modern women would find more like them. I preferred Beverley's earlier works. Those books gave a better sense of being in a different time and place, while presenting interesting characters, and clever plot ideas. Another marriage of convenience tale, not the fresh plot ideas of the earlier books in the series. Solid book, well written, not her best--3 1/2 stars.

Why is the edition so pricey? The publisher does not pass on savings on paper.
Kitty Cateril has been widowed for two years and living with her mother in law. She was miserable her mother in law wanted Kitty to remain in black and mourning.A friend tells her about Braydon that has just been made Viscount Dountry . He did not want to be so had decided to get a wife to help her in his new duties. He planned on living most of the time in London . She would stay in the country managing the estate.Shec would also have to deal with his Ward and her grandmother. They hated her the 16year old had thought Braydon would have married her. Kitty did accept the offer after knowing this and married him.
The book started out well but as it got into finding out more on the fifth Viscount now dead it got boring to me. The couple were newly married after knowing each other a week.they spent most of the time trying to solve this mystery. I thought it over shadowed the romance.you should read An Arranged Marriage and A Unwilling Bride. Two of her books from the Company of Rogues Series .They are so much better books. I have read them multiple times. The whole series were great. I might have given this book a higher rating if I had not compared it to the other books
