Wow. Yup that pretty much sums up how I feel about this one. Of course I've thoroughly enjoyed all of the author's previous works so it wasn't that surprising that I enjoyed this one too. But still there's always a chance that this might be that one book that doesn't work for some reason right?

The city of Trevell renews itself every hundred years or so with the rebirth of the Phoenix and the Silver Ash. This time however something has gone wrong and it is up to Daphne to help fix it.

I loved this story! It's an extraordinary adventure all inside of one city. Daphne is sweet and innocent in her own way, but she is also smart and determined. I enjoyed being introduced to her world through her eyes. How throughout her adventures she sees new parts of the city, and even old parts, with new eyes as she tries to save her daughter, herself, her city, and the rest of the people she cares about. I really got a feel for what Trevell was and what it was supposed to be.
I really enjoyed the way the story moved as well. While the descriptions were detailed, the story itself moved swiftly and took me along with it. Whether it was fight scenes or dialogue I found myself eagerly turning to the next page to see what would happen next.
The story ended quite differently than I thought it would. I won't go into detail but I hope that there will be more stories about Trevell and its surrounding world. I also hope there will be more stories about Daphne.

Daphne and the Silver Ash A Fairy Tale of Myth and Legend edition by Joseph Robert Lewis Children eBooks Reviews

This was a novella received through LibraryThing's Member Giveaways. It is a short, sweet, melancholy yet ultimately hopeful story, aching with a feeling of might-have-been and will-never-be-again as one thoughtful and gallant young woman tries to deal with the repercussions of what three selfish and powerful magical beings have done each in their own self-interest. It is nicely conceived, based on folklore - some very nice world-building which would lend itself very well to a longer work, perhaps set in the city's past - and nicely written; I think the only reason it took me as long as it did to read it was that I had a bad feeling about the ending. The exploration of the magic and its effects on the city and on Daphne were beautiful.

I think my only quibble with the story is that Daphne is introduced as a shoemaker in a city too poor for people to afford shoes or for there to be leather from which to make them. It seems as though this means that her city's decline has been extremely rapid in the past few years, because Daphne is extremely young; she must have been able to ply her trade at some point, but no longer, which just seems improbable at the age of nineteen. It would have been interesting to know how and why she became a shoemaker, and it would have tied the story together nicely if her trade had had some bearing on the denouement. The Chekhov's Gun technique is particularly worthwhile to keep in mind with a novella, I think. But, again, this is a minor detail, and barely detracted from my enjoyment of the read; I'll be looking forward to the author's other works with pleasure.
At least I HOPE there's a sequel! This story is so good, I couldn't put it down. After crying at the ending, I'm REALLY hoping there's a sequel that has a fairytale happy ending. Buy it! I'll bet if enough of us clamor for a second part, the author will make it so!
A very good children's book. Unexpected ending. Looking forward to the next book in the series. I would Recomend this highly imaginative book for any age to read.
...I just wish it had been complete in this volume.

The characters are well drawn, and the language is appropriate for this type of story. This was a short, welcome read after I had finished Neil Gaiman's Stardust (which is actually directed at a different audience.)
Daphne and the Silver Ash is really a fairy tale, with all the ingredients magic, far away town depending on the miracle of the rebirth of the Phoenix, magical characters. I don't read these kind of stories often, but I enjoyed this one. It has a certain fascinating atmosphere.
The way the young Daphne played the key role in saving the town was compelling. I hoped for happier ending, but this one makes sense too, and fits into the story.
It's a nice read when you are not in the mood to start a long book. And the cover is really cool.
Daphne a young wife and mother, whose husband is part of the city guard. At the center of their city is the silver ash and phoenix. Every year, the phoenix and the ash die and are reborn, and their rebirth renews the city. When Daphne is called to sing to the tree, she is pulled into a struggle for her life, as well as the life of the city.

This is a short novella and is child friendly. With that said, I am an adult and enjoyed the story all the same. The story is unique and seems to borrow from different mythologies. It is fast-faced, well written and well edited. I can definitely recommend it.
Some adventure, an anxiety filled breathless quest to save everyone by Daphne. It was so sad to me that her own people turned on her so. I think if we were raised on myths and superstition this is how we would act today. Then I realized it is how we act today which made me even more sad.

Excellent writing, emotional characters, no happy ending for everyone - though most party at the end.
