It was 1865 and the War Between The States was over. More than 750,000 men, women and children were killed during the war. The names of more than half of them were unknown. Almost no records were kept of the dead and many of them were buried in the field of battle in unmarked graves. It was a sad time for the whole country. To the government’s surprise, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Even though the country was going through a healing period, the government continued its attack on the Indian tribes. The government had freed all of the slaves, but rounded up the different Indian tribes and forced them to live on reservations. It was a different time and people had to be tough physically and mentally to survive.
The people of the western states had very little to do with the war other than to ship gold from California to the government in the East. Railroads were built all the way to California for this purpose. Many of the towns in the West had no law and much of the gold was stolen. Without law, crime was rampant. A hundred years earlier, the Spaniards were mining gold and shipping it to Spain. Their mines stretched all the way from California down through Mexico. Much of this gold was stolen by bandits like an Apache Indian known as Reco. This is the story of a young woman who sets out to find the gold stolen by Reco and the lost gold mine of Concho Canyon. (This is an adult novel.)

This is the 2nd short story that I have read from this author and found Legend of Concho Canyon a very enjoyable read. The characters and the plot grab you and you get enough details to follow alone and briefly picture the characters and the surroundings, but the action comes hard and fast. Stories like this don't get bogged down in flowery language, rather just the right descriptions needed to move through the action. Would like to have seen this as a longer story/novel. Could be made into an interesting B western also.Product details

The Legend Of Concho Canyon eBook James Butler Reviews
This is a great weastern short story. It has some grit, a little mystery, and a little bit of a love story too.
A young girl and her even younger brother live in the shadow of a legend that saw their father murdered and their own lives held hostage for the gold the legend puts as being near their land. Not the author's best work, but still easy to read.
