This young adult science fiction novel was a great read. I'm a big fan of Cory Doctorow and this reminded me a lot of Little Brother. The protagonist is a smart and sensitive kid who gets in over her head fast, just as Cory's protagonist did. In this case Jan doesn't end up going to prison, but things get dire for her fast. It's written in first person and the pages fly by. First person doesn't work for everyone, but I like the intimacy it can deliver. Jan's a character I can identify with. I knew kids like her growing up and I know some adult versions of her. Having a strong, and yet far from perfect, lead is vitally important in fiction in general, more so when you make the first person POV choice.The other things I enjoyed about this book were all of the issues it raised about cyber-security and the need for it whatever your age might be. I geek for a living and the technical details Michael includes are spot on, but he includes them in a way that won't go over the head of most teens. This is the world most of them live in. We put our trust in companies of all shapes and sizes, giving them every bit of data they need to sink us. Many of us, myself included, put our lives online for hundreds of people to see. As an adult, I hope I do it responsibly. As a teen, I know I wouldn't have and many today don't. I hope this makes the readers think about it and have some fruitful discussions with their parents. The whole book is very timely.
The plot and pacing are very tight. This is a thriller and Michael keeps raising the stakes and making things tough on Jan, her family, and her friends. There are also elements of a mystery. He kept me guessing all the way through, though a more scrupulous reading may have told me what was going to happen. Regardless, this book did what mystery thrillers need to do.
Finally, let me make an appeal. I would love to see this as a graphic novel. If there are any artists reading this, give it a look and contact Michael. ;-)

This book is fun. If I had to describe it in one word, that’s what it would be. Fun. I really enjoyed reading this book from start to finish. Some books you seem to drag yourself through even if they’re good just because they have those parts that linger or some might read fast but leave parts out so that you want to scream at the book because it’s just not there, not this book. It starts out great, stays great in the middle, and continues that way until the end. It’s fun!
As per usual for my reviews, I’m not giving the story away because you need to get yourself a copy and get to the reading. At the time of this review typing it’s free so you have no excuse really so go get it! It’s good, you should give it a shot. Anyway, I seemed to relate a bit more with the mom, minus the wheelchair meaning I’m old and stuff, so I was afraid the technology stuff would get me (the end binary was just not cool! Yet it was), however although it was over my head it wasn’t so far over that I was lost at all because the author, in the role of the character telling the story, 16 year old Janus, actually did a great job of informing you without really letting you know that you were (in my case old and completely out of the loop and in need of…) getting a bit of a tech lesson. It was just so well written. You get lots of cool tech stuff going on, mystery, characters you learn to care about so much you feel like you really know them, YA angst, and so much more.
This was a really great book that I would recommend to anyone. I’m heading out now to start the second one.
~I’m not quite sure why I downloaded this book…but, I am certainly glad that I did!
~I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll be somewhat vague. The author wrote in such a high-tech manner that you’d believe the entire premise of the book is based totally on factual information. It was not written in a way that one must be techno-savvy to enjoy it.
~This was a high-tension, fast-paced, suspenseful, action story. Written for the Young Adult reading audience, but quite acceptable for other age bracket readership. I really liked the main character, Jan Rose. She had her teenage girl life issues, family relationships, and other stuff to deal with…which made for a very believable character.
~I would recommend this book for those who are looking for a captivating story, which will make you want to keep reading without putting it down.
