Very well written. At first I wasn't sure I liked how much of Clara & Roo's story Gorant included, but as I continued, I realized that he couldn't tell Wallace's story without telling theirs, since they're a huge part of it. Without them fighting for his natural-born right to exist, he wouldn't have been able to accomplish so much and inspire so many. And if not for them, my little lady, may not be with me today, and without Freya, my life would not be better off. I am also thrilled to know Wallace kept them together long enough to "figure" out Clara's health issue, that made their life such a struggle for a few years...it's good to see the "good guys" win in life, not just in the movies. I'm glad they didn't give up on each other.

Wallace, Roo & Clara's story shows that humans are capable of nearly the same level of compassion & commitment, that pitbulls & all dogs show us. It's also good to see that a good, hardworking guy can still get the girl...& find a way to keep her.

Wallace The Underdog Who Conquered a Sport Saved a Marriage and Championed Pit Bulls One Flying Disc at a Time Jim Gorant 9781592407316 Books Reviews

It took me a few minutes to figure out what to call this review--it still doesn't seem to do the book justice--but WOW! When Wallace was placed on this Earth it seemed as if he had zero chance at anything simply because of his breed--he was stereotyped as bad but one couple sensed he was different and took a chance on him. In sensing that spark in Wallace's eyes Roo and Clara took a leap of faith and enjoyed a hard earned trip to the top of the world. Wallace and Roo were able to show the country that taking chances on a "worthless cause" changed not only their lives for the better, but also that of pit bulls around the world. Now that I am done with this review I want to read the book all over again!!!
Jim Gorant has done it again! His excellent work, thorough research and engaging way of writing has represented Wallace and family in a great light, and done bully breeds everywhere proud. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Wallace, Roo, Clara and other recognizable members of Wallace's extended family from the beginning. I became familiar with Wallace in 2006, when he (and the resurgence of canine disc) was still relatively new, while raising and training my own large breed, not-exactly-right-for-disc-dogging dog. Frisbee was actually suggested to me by someone who knew Wallace, and it proved to be a great way to engage and train my pup. I still use the disc as a training tool, to this day, though I was always too hesitant to put myself out there and compete. We stick to the backyard. This book brought back memories. It was so much fun to read about people I'm familiar with in the disc dog world via YouTube- everybody who is anybody is in this book. I guess you can't really profess to "know" anybody that you only know via the internet, but seeing the names of folks like Roo, Josh Grenell, Ron Watson, Danny Eggleston, etc... in print made things that much more real for this reader. I didn't know Wallace was so perilously on the edge of not having the life he's been blessed with- there are definitely some tear-jerker moments, though mostly tears of joy.

Wallace and his crew are definitely deserving of having a book written about them, and what a great message this book conveys!

Best of all I love the sentiment that echoed throughout this book, from one dog person to another if you could, you would give it all up, just to have one more good day with your dog.

I can't wait to read more from Jim Gorant- I'm hoping he writes about Hector next!
I enjoyed the book, particularly the strength and commitment of Wallace's human companions. I actually ordered it thinking it was about Ultimate Frisbee, the game. I was more than happy to find out it was about Wallace the ultimate frisbee dog. My goof resulted in a good read. The connections to the book for me were pretty amazing as I had a wonderful dog adopted through the same organization and know firsthand the impacts of celiac and thyroid related illness. I appreciated the honest commentary throughout the book. I think it would have been easy to write in hindsight about the positive aspects of saving Wallace but I feel the book is much stronger with what seems like an objective reflection on a great dog and equally wonderful people.
The beginning was a bit confusing, but in the end this is a wonderful book. In fact it is the second best true story dog book that I have read, and I have read a lot of them. The story is simple enough. The twice abandoned pit bull is rescued from probable death by a couple who see something more in him. The road is not easy, but with love and persistence they find things the dog loves that lets him focus his intense energy and drive. They compete for the sheer love of the sport and of each other. The time and effort it takes to reach world class in any sport is just immense. I can’t personally imagine putting in that work while holding down two jobs, a marriage and a houseful of rescued dogs. Roo and Wallace are true champions in the finest sense of the word. The best advice for others? “Go out and have fun with your dog!”

I am convinced dogs love performing for others. I have a handicapped lab mix. He has maybe 20% use of his back legs. Even at 12, he loves to run but clearly prefers having an audience. So I am sure Wallace and the other dogs get the same thrill performing in front of others.

One of the best things about this book is that you can go on Youtube and see Wallace and Roo in action. The bond between the two is truly amazing and heartwarming. Gives me hope for the human race.
